June 20, 2008

The Bobby Sanabria Big Band took this years prize for best Latin Jazz recording of 2008 as awarded by the Jazz Journalists Association at their twelfth annual awards ceremony for his critically acclaimed recording, Big Band Urban Folktales, which was also nominated for a mainstream Grammy this year. The ceremony occurred this past June 18 at NYC's Jazz Standard night club. Accepting for Mr. Sanabria was his lovely wife Elena Martinez who stated, "Bobby would like to thank all of the journalists who voted for him. Unfortunately he's performing with his big band at the Verona Jazz Festival in Italy. You know it's so hard to get a gig here in New York", to which the crowd roared with applause and laughter.

The JJA is made up of of over 450 jazz journalists around the world. It's mission is to promote the interest of journalists covering jazz. Besides the awards, the JJA has established educational and enhancement programs at music fests and conferences worldwide and organized programs to train and mentor new and emerging journalists.
